    For example

    La Fontaine de Vaucluse

It is here that perhaps one of the most famous love affairs of European history is recorded. The love of Pétrarque for Laure of Noves. A Love never to find its glory.

In a manuscript note on Virgll, Pétrarque declares Laure to be already celebrated by her virtue and long sung in my poetry, appeared to me for the first time in the flower of my youth, the year of our lord 1327, the 6th of April, in the church of St. Claire d'' Avignon, in the morning.

Below the ruins of the Chateau in this closed valley is the extraordinary source of the river Sorgue. Water erupts from an underground source as a raging torrent to quickly become a fast flowing, cold crystal clear torrent. Though called the Fontaine de Vaucluse it is an erratic fury appearing and disappearing independent of season or rainfall.
